Introduction

The Abbey of Lagrasse – one of the most beautiful and historic abbeys of France – is situated in the south-west of France, about 40 miles from Carcassonne. The precise date of the Foundation is unknown but it is certain that it was re-founded in 779 and received the protection of the Emperor Charlemagne. Though the house survived the troubles surrounding the Cathar heresies and the wars of religion, the monks were expelled in 1792. It was then used for several purposes, including a nursing home, until the Canons of Lagrasse purchased the property in 2004. The offices and the Liturgies of the Classical Rome Rite are celebrated with great beauty and care by the Canons and the countryside surrounding the abbey is renowned for its tranquillity.

The Community

There are now 34 Canons living at the Abbey, most of whom are under 40 years of age. Their full name is “Canons Regular of the Mother of God” and follow the Augustinian tradition. The community was founded in Gap, France, in 1969 by Monsignor Wladimir-Marie de Saint Jean. The Monastic Vows and the Liturgies are all conducted in the Traditional or “Extraordinary” form of the Roman Rite. In 1997 it was erected as an Abbey of Pontifical Right dependent directly on the Holy See. It enjoys the paternal protection of the Bishop of Carcassonne. The present Abbot of Lagrasse is the Rt. Revd. Emmanuel-Marie de St Jean. The abbey is able to accommodate a small number of men for extended retreats. The community would be grateful to receive Mass stipends. Details on how to make such a donation are given to the right.

The Abbey Buildings

The Abbey Church and monastic buildings, though of exceptional beauty and quality, are in a poor state. Most of the buildings are habitable but they need considerable effort and expenditure to bring them back into full use.  At present extensive renovations are being carried out on the 18th century cloister. The bell town has lain unfinished since the 16th century! The transepts of the Abbey Church are in a particularly dilapidated state and these need to be restored in order to provide sufficient side altars for private Masses to be offered.

The Friends

The UK Friends of the Canonical Abbey of Lagrasse has the aim of assisting the community in restoring this glorious Abbey and in helping such a vibrant, Traditional, community to become better know in the UK. A particular project we have in mind is to bring the transepts back into use.
